| The KK Theatre Group is a sub-committee of SPArKS, formed in December, 2007. Our mission is to raise the profile of drama and theatre in KK by involving performers, artists, enthusiasts and the community in our activities. We have been involved in a variety of activities over the past two years. MONTHLY EVENT Every month we have a Book Night – for those who love words and reading and sharing ideas. It began in February 2008 and is still going! Generally, we meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Kinabalu Yacht Club. Anyone who wants to come is welcome! You can bring a book, poem or DVD to talk about and swap with others. Or you can just come and listen – make comments – join in. Our evenings are relaxed, centred on books and poems and the conversations that these inspire. EVENTS IN 2008 In June, 2008, SPArKS hosted the first KK Arts Festival. The KK Theatre Group organised a poster competition for this event and the winning poster was used in the advertising for the Arts Festival. Street Theatre was also part of the 2008 KK Arts Festival and a variety of local performers entertained the audience! Later in that same year, Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! came to KK for two hilarious evenings! EVENTS IN 2009 In June, 2009 the KK Theatre Group organised the first French Film Festival in KK as part of the second KK Arts Festival. Three very interesting French movies were shown, brought to us by the French Embassy in KL. This was the first time that there was such an event here and the opening night was An Event – with the presence of the Cultural Counsellor from the French Embassy in KL! In August of 2009, the ballet 'The Slave Princess' was performed in KK. Members of the KK Theatre Group had worked for months beforehand to help make this production a reality and when it happened, it was a really magical event. This was the first full-length ballet to be performed in KK and it was wonderful to have the Malaysian choreographer with us, as well as principal dancers who are also Malaysian. The event also served as a fantastic opportunity for 20 or more young local dancers to train, rehearse and perform with professional artists. |
